VA Reports Record Increase in Screenings for Suicide Risk and Follow-up Care

Department says more veterans are receiving screenings and timely evaluations as part of suicide prevention efforts.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced record levels of screenings for suicide risk and follow-up evaluations for veterans identified as being at risk. The department reported that 88 percent of veterans receiving VA care completed annual suicide risk screenings by March 2026, while 96 percent of veterans flagged as at risk received a comprehensive follow-up evaluation and support plan within 24 hours. VA officials said the improvements follow recommendations issued in a 2024 Office of Inspector General (OIG) report examining screening and follow-up practices.

VA Secretary Doug Collins said the department has increased efforts to reach veterans who are not currently enrolled in VA care, noting that many veteran suicides involve individuals outside the VA health system.

“VA care and benefits are key to reducing Veteran suicide, and under President Trump, the department is redoubling its efforts to reach those most at risk,” said Secretary Collins.

The department reported that outreach and enrollment initiatives contributed to more than 125,000 additional VA health care enrollments in 2026. VA also encouraged veterans and families to use the Veterans Crisis Line for immediate support and assistance.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For VA Secretary Collins as he seeks to ensure U.S. veterans receive the physical and mental health care they need.
  • For VA officials as they collaborate with mental health professionals and crisis responders to provide care and intervention services.
  • For veterans facing mental health struggles, isolation, trauma, or crisis situations, and for their families and support networks.
